Glebe Tree Planting

At the end of 2020 a successful application was made by the Parish Council to the Woodland Trust for a number of tree saplings to be planted on the Glebe Field. 105 saplings were donated by the Woodland Trust. There were several different species of tree, all of which were native to the UK. These included Willow, Crab Apple, Hawthorn and Downy Birch.

In May 2021 volunteers (ages ranged from 5 to 80+) from all walks of life joined in to plant the trees, including villagers young and old, children from Upton Primary School and the Explorer Scouts. All took great care, pleasure and pride in planting the tiny saplings, putting the protection mat around the roots and fixing the cover to protect each tree from wildlife and the worst of the weather.

Over the last three years the trees have been watched over by users of the Glebe Field who have alongside other volunteers reinstated the covers when necessary, hammered in the stakes and have weeded around the trees, mulched around the roots and ensured the good health of the saplings as they have grown into healthy small trees. There has been a natural wastage of approximately 10 saplings but generally most of the trees are about 2 – 3m tall and will be ready to come out of their protective covers next year.

Eventually the trees will help to block sound from the motorway and help produce a beneficial environment to local residents, dog walkers, dogs and wildlife.
